Why go natural?

Sweating! No one wants to sweat and feel embarrassed. But did you know that sweating has two crucial jobs? Sweating/perspiring regulates our bodies’ temperature and releases toxins through the pores. Sweat is just salt and water and does not actually smell! What does create the bad odor is perspiration coming into contact with the natural bacteria that lives on skin. This reaction is easily undone with our organic deodorant.

Antiperspirants, chemical, synthetic and fragrance laden deodorants work to clog up pores and prevent those two functions. The truth is that all these additives are completely unnecessary to avert body odor, not to mention the potential long term side effects. Here is what makes our deodorant better!

What our deodorant DOES NOT have

Aluminum

The main, active metal ingredient in antiperspirants. It works by forming a temporary shield within the sweat duct that help reduce the flow of sweat to the skin's surface. Some research suggests that these aluminum compounds may be absorbed by the skin and cause changes in estrogen receptors of breast cells. Because estrogen can promote the growth of both cancer and non-cancer breast cells, some scientists suggest that using the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may be a risk factor for the development of breast cancer.

Parabens

It has many different forms, and widely used as an artificial preservative in deodorant and cosmetics to extend the shelf-life. Research suggests some parabens may interfere with the way your body produces and regulates estrogen and other hormones. Putting parabens close to the estrogen-sensitive tissue in the breast every day may promote the growth of cancer cells. That goes for men, as well as women.

Triclosan

This is added as an artificial antimicrobial chemical to kill bacteria on surfaces and skin. Recent studies suggest this chemical may disrupt thyroid function and other critical hormone systems. Other research suggests that triclosan could mess with your microbiome (gut health).

Propylene Glycol

Used to keep substances from drying out, and it was originally developed as an anti-freeze, but is now included in some deodorants and antiperspirants. It is a neurotoxin known to cause contact dermatitis, kidney damage, and liver damage. In propylene glycol’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), published by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, workers are urged to avoid skin contact with the toxic chemical as it may cause eye and skin irritation, gastrointestinal irritation and discomfort, nausea, headache, vomiting, and central nervous depression.

Phthalates

These compounds help deodorant and other cosmetics, including fragrances, stick to your skin. They also appear to disrupt the way your body produces and uses the hormone testosterone, which is also produced by women and not just men. It plays a role in energy and muscle maintenance. Phthalates could impair reproductive ability in men and could impact fetal development in pregnant women. Research has also linked phthalates to lower IQ’s and higher rates of asthma.

Our products also do not contain any of the following chemicals: Sulfates, BHA, Petrochemical, polyethylene glycol, synthetic dyes, artificial colors, talc, perfumes, DEA, MEA, and TEA.

Your underarms are one of the most sensitive areas of your body. So doesn’t it make sense to keep harsh chemicals away from them?

What our deodorant DOES have

Virgin Coconut oil

Coconut oil has been described as “the healthiest oil on earth.” In traditional medicine, coconut has been esteemed as a valuable source of both food and medicine. For thousands of years coconut products have been used to treat a wide variety of health problem. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil possess antimicrobial properties, which help protect the skin from harmful bacteria. Coconut oil also reduces inflammation keeping the skin soft and moisturized.

Essential oils

Essential oils have been used for many years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Because of their antidepressant, stimulating, detoxifying, antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties, they are recently gaining popularity as a natural, safe and cost-effective therapy for a number of health concerns. Lavender oil not only has a therapeutic scent, it also boosts potent anti-inflammatory properties and is ultra-soothing for skin. The Tea Tree oil acts as an anti-inflammatory relieving itchy and dry skin. Tea tree is also antibacterial oil.

Arrowroot

Arrowroot is a starch obtained from the rootstock of tropical plants. It has been used as a topical treatment to promote the healing of cuts/scars and is a great, natural potassium and calcium supplement. It reduces odors, moisturizes the skin and helps to eliminate toxins. Arrowroot absorbs oils very well. This white powder is used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in food preparation. It is also very useful as a chemical-free, non-synthetic body care formulation base. We include it in our deodorant to help absorb moisture and reduce oiliness.

Baking soda

Also known as sodium bicarbonate with superpowers that come from a two-letter term: “p.H.” that stands for potential of hydrogen which is how you measure acidity. When added to substances and acids, it becomes more alkaline (neutral). That’s why it can quickly soothe an upset stomach or cover bad smells.

Beeswax

Beeswax is the natural wax substance that hives produce. It helps keep the skin hydrated and soft. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, beeswax can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungus, helping with rash conditions. Beeswax helps moisturize the skin without clogging the pores.
